Three months later, the earl perched on a riverbank pretending to fish with his youngest brother-in-law. He had gone over the subject he needed to bring up many times in his mind, but was no closer to wisdom than he had been the year before. Randy had been unwilling to discuss what happened to him, and they were reluctant to force him. The boy had to move on, however, and Will was at a loss to know how to bring it up. He stared at the river, lost in thought. In the end, the boy gave him the opening.

“Charles said he is going to Westminster School next term,” Randy said without looking at him.

“Yes. He and I decided it was time,” Will answered, feeling like he walked on an icy lake, never sure when he would step on a thin spot and fall in. He cast his line one more time.

“He says we’re going to need Greek and Latin, but I want to be a farmer. Why do I need that?” Randy looked at him with desperation in his eyes. “Why do I have to go to school?”

Will put his rod down and grasped both of the boy’s arms, turning him so that they looked into each other’s faces. “Let me make one thing very clear. You don’t have to go just because your cousin is going. You will miss each other, but that isn’t the most important thing.” He could feel the boy relax.

“Charles says a gentleman needs to know those things. I don’t want to be a gentleman.”

The earl laughed. “You’re already well on your way to being a gentleman, Randy, Latin or no Latin.” Something in the boy’s tone sobered him, however. “Matthews, that vile house-master was no gentleman for all the good his education did him, Randy. He had no honor.”

“I hate him!” Randy shouted, pulling away.

“And well you should.”

“I wish he was dead.”

Will sympathized. Killing the man would have felt right, but murder wouldn't help the boys. “He’s been cashiered, sent away. He’ll never work in a school. He won’t hurt you or any other boy again.”

“Will Charles have a house master at the new school?”

Will ran a hand around the back of his neck. “Yes. But the school is in London, and the boys have more freedom.”

“Freedom?”

“They aren’t regulated after school. If you wanted to come home you could. We could make sure someone was at Chadbourn House in the city during term: me, your sister, both of us—or trusted friends. You would never be far from help.”

Randy turned away and cast his line again. After waiting a long while, the earl joined him.

“Why does a farmer need education?”

“The more you know, the more choices you have. Ideas gleaned from that knowledge improve your chances of success with your land or any other enterprises you decide to take on. The more you know the broader your life will be.” Will hauled in a fish, and leaned over to net it. When Randy didn’t answer him, he went on, “Every man needs as much education as he can acquire.
